PROGRAMS AND EVENTS UPDATE

An Update from Our Founder & CEO
Time flies and it’s hard to believe that we are on now in a new year and a new decade. We’ve made great strides last year and I appreciate each and every one of you who continues to support our mission and vision for safe, secure and thriving communities. We couldn’t do it without you.

In the past four months, we sponsored the first Putting with Heroes event with golf professional Cathy Harbin at the San Angelo Country Club in San Angelo, Texas. We partnered with Kids-U to deliver a safe and secure learning environment for kids living in high crime neighborhoods (northeast Dallas). Our Shop Talk Program, a partnership with Irving Police Department, has taken off and multiple jurisdictions have asked that we start the program in their community. We attended the presentation of the U.S. Attorney’s Distinguished Service in Policing Award ceremony (DC) where Irving PD Detective, Jon Plunkett, and our program were honored.

At One CommunityUSA, we’re grateful for your support as we continue to launch and deliver our community-based programs to the people and neighborhoods that need them most. It is only through your generous support that we can continue our goal of transforming lives one neighborhood at a time.

Shop Talk

One CommunityUSA has partnered with the Irving Police Department (IPD) and formalized a trust-based communication program between law enforcement and owners of African American Barber Shops and Hairstyling Salons. “…through the Shop Talk Program, we are growing relationships that lead to better understanding and ultimately safer neighborhoods,” Chief Jeff Spivey, Irving Texas Police Department (ICTN Interview).

Putting with Heroes

San Angelo, Texas
On October 12, One CommunityUSA sponsored the premiere Putting with Heroes event with golf professional Cathy Harbin, hosted at the San Angelo Country Club in San Angelo, Texas. This fun-filled outing included area youth from across the community, including the West Texas Boys Ranch and the local House of Faith, all engaged in some spirited but friendly competition on the putting green. Three of the kids made a hole in one, and officers on the winning teams declared their victory couldn’t have been achieved without the putting skills of their young partners. After the event, trophies were presented to the kids with top three scores; and plenty of pizza was shared during conversations between first responders and community youth.

Kids University

Here We Grow Again!
While after-school programs do exist, many are not easily accessible or affordable. One CommunityUSA has partnered with Kids U, the U.S. Department of Justice, the Dallas Police Department/NE Community Engagement Division, the Dallas Independent School District, the Dallas Police Athletic League and Dallas’ Deputy Mayor Pro Tem, B. Adam McGough to open an after-school learning center and eight-week, all-day science, technology, education and math (STEM) summer camp program at the Vineyards at the Ranch Apartments. The complex is located in a high crime neighborhood being tracked by Dallas Police Department’s Targeted Area Action Grids program. The learning center will be part of the National Center for Family Learning program, which uses a whole child approach that extends to the family, as well as the community.

One CommunityUSA fosters and supports law enforcement and first responders participating in the programs as mentors, tutors and role models. This unique combination of volunteers, first responders, civic leaders and educators gives parents the peace of mind that their children are safe, secure and close to home. Added benefits for the building owner include increased public safety, more stable rental occupancy, the potential for increased property value, as well as being seen as a civic ambassador that cares about tenants.

Imagine any city or town across the United States where neighborhoods are safe, thriving economically and filled with families who are proud to live and work there. At One CommunityUSA, we understand why we must work together to bring unity back into our communities. Your donation makes dreams come true.
